What is a Living Wage
The Official Definition:
“The living wage standard allows for no more than 30% of income to be spent on rent or a mortgage and is sufficiently higher than the poverty level.”
The Formula:
Rent divided by .3 = Living Wage Threshold
So, if the apartment you want to live in costs $1,050 per month…
$1,050/.3 = $3,500
$3,500 per month is $42,000 per year or $21 per hour
This is the threshold.
If your rent is more than 30% of your income, you will struggle to make ends meet.
If your rent is less than 30% of your income you will have more money to spend on the things you want. Not just the things you have to have.
